VIP: a new portal target emerges for Maryland basketball, Kevin Willard

Head coach Kevin Willard still has another available scholarship to work with ahead of the 2024-25 season, and another target has emerged heading into the rest of the week. After showing interest two years ago in the former four-star guard, a source confirmed to IBG that Maryland has been back in communication with former Mississippi State guard Shakeel Moore as the two sides work on a date to visit. Assistant Greg Manning Jr. is leading the way for Maryland while director of player personnel Ricky Harris is involved in the Terps' portal pursuit once again, becoming a key piece in recruiting efforts this offseason. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjIMoDgIiSs Maryland was one of two finalists for Moore back in 2021, alongside Seton Hall, before he opted to return to Mississippi State for another season. Moore entered the transfer portal back in early April and has one year of eligibility remaining. He averaged 8.8 points, 2.1 assists, 1.4 steals and 2.8 rebounds per game while shooting over 42% from the floor and 30% from three over his last three seasons, including shooting 47% from the field and nearly 36% from three in 2023-24. While Moore doesn't fit the profile of a three-point sharpshooter that Maryland has eyed for the final spot, his defensive efficiency has been on full display through his college career. Back in early February, Moore sat second nationally in steals per foul (1.39) -- just edging out former Maryland guard Jahmir Young (1.36). Meanwhile, former Wake Forest guard Damari Monsanto remains in holding pattern as another portal target for the final scholarship spot.
