After suiting up for Good Counsel as a sophomore, 2025 three-star Peyton Nelson made the early season transfer out of St. Frances into Wise (MD) roughly one month ago, but the 5-foot-11, 180-pound athlete is being used similarly to how he expected to be used with the Panthers and its shown in recent weeks.
“They’re using me a lot in the backfield. If I’m not in the backfield I’m in the slot a lot,” Nelson told IBG. “I’ve probably got maybe four or five receiving touchdowns in the four games and the rest are rushing touchdowns. I ran a kickoff back, doing kickoff and punt returner so I’m all over the field. They’ve got me more as an athlete more than just a running back.”
It’s a big reason why Nelson has grabbed the attention of multiple Power Five schools with Maryland, Duke, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Illinois and Boston College among the schools to extend verbal offers so far.
Maryland has long been on Nelson’s radar and he was slated to visit for the Illinois game, but wasn’t able to make it in. He expects to be in College Park for Maryland’s next home game, though. “I wanted to do last game but the weather messed that up, but Penn State sounds pretty good to me,” Nelson told IBG.
Nelson added that he and running backs coach Latrell Scott have spoken “like twice” while inside linebacker coach Lance Thompson is the one staying in most frequent contact. “I’ve talked to him like twice but I’ve talked to coach Thompson a lot. I hear from him pretty much every week. He reaches out, hits me up. It’s going good. We’ll send each other messages, small talk. He’ll send me some stuff about the games coming up, so we’re comfortable with each other.”
Nelson has also taken recent visits to Old Dominion and Duke, but beyond his likely trip to College Park on Nov. 4, the Pumas offensive weapon is locking into the season with playoffs around the corner and Wise looking to reclaim the 4A state title.
“I’m just trying to focus on the season, build my film up really good and then lock in with visits after that.”
Nelson is not yet rated by On3, but is rated a three-star prospect and an 87 overall by 247Sports.
