Top-15 prospect reacts to Maryland offer, updates recruitment

Maryland is still looking for its first 2024 commitment as they welcome their undoubted biggest visitor to campus this weekend when five-star center Derik Queen arrives on Friday for his long-awaited official visit. The staff has also continued to add new names to its growing 2025 board with the season around the corner with Vermont Academy (MA) top-15 prospect Joson Sanon picking up an offer from Maryland this week. The Terps joined Arizona and LSU as the newest schools in the mix for the 6-foot-5 guard, but Sanon has been steadily hearing from assistant David Cox prior to last Wednesday’s offer. “I know him because he used to coach over at Rhode Island,” Sanon told IBG. “I know a little bit about them. I know they play pretty fast. The way they play is really similar to how I play.” Maryland is still in the early stages of the pursuit with Sanon adding “it’s been a lot more getting to know me” with the Terps’ staff thus far. Sonan added he’s open to visiting Maryland as Cox continues his pursuit. “I’d be interested in visiting and seeing what they have,” Sonan added. Georgetown, Providence, Iowa, Nebraska and Marquette are among the schools who've offered Sonan, also a 2024 reclass candidate. Whether he remains in 2025 or moves up to 2024 is a question he'll answer this winter, but Sonan's recruitment is beginning to pick up with multiple official visits now set. He’ll hit the road for an official visit to Oklahoma State beginning Oct. 27, then head to Arizona beginning Nov. 18, LSU beginning Nov. 24 then Kansas beginning Dec. 21. Sonan added he’s working on finalizing a date with Alabama as well. “I’m trying to get a date there because the first one got canceled,” he added. The four-star prospect doesn’t have any timeframe for a decision, but along with NIL, his fit in the play style is a focus for him down the stretch. “The way they bring up development and how I fit in.” Sonan is rated a four-star prospect and a 97 overall by On3, sitting as the 11th-best prospect in the country and fourth-best shooting guard.
