Maryland will host a pair of prospects this weekend for an official visit as offensive tackle Andre Roye and safety Peyton Williams make their way to campus. For Williams, the 6-foot-1, 180-pound safety out of Rockwall (TX) will embark on his first official visit after co-defensive coordinator Brian Williams anted up back on April 2. Since then, co-defensive coordinator Brian Stewart has led his recruitment as the two sides have built a growing relationship.
“It’s pretty good. He calls me a lot so we’re on the phone and coach [Lenoy] Jones, he also reaches out to me and calls me,” Williams told Inside the Black & Gold. “We had a good chance to know each other.” Williams has not been able to take in a virtual visit from the Terps’ staff heading into this weekend’s official but he’s heard about the perks of becoming a Terp, including the new indoor facility.
“He’s been telling me about the program and about the new facilities they’ve got and the area.” One aspect that is critical to Williams is learning the details of how he fits into the scheme, but Stewart has taken time to show why Williams does fit with what the Terps are looking for. “They said they like the way I play, the way I hit and my ball skills.” This weekend will give Williams his first in-depth opportunity to learn about the program.
“I don’t really know much about Maryland. I just want to learn more about the area, the defense, meet all the coaches, see how I like the area, how I feel when I’m there.”
With offers in hand from Colorado, Florida State, and Michigan State, this weekend marks the first official visit for Williams before he treks to South Carolina on June 18 for an unofficial visit. Williams is unsure whether he will schedule additional official visits this month and added he does not have a leader nor is he close to making a commitment.
“I haven’t really thought about it because we have a tight schedule with football and 7-on-7, but I also want to save some of my visits for the fall.”
Williams is rated a three-star prospect and an 85 overall by 247Sports, sitting as the nation’s 63rd-best safety prospect.
