Terps stay perfect, remain #1 with Albany next

Maryland held the top spot in this week’s updated top 25 after staying perfect in a close win over Notre Dame on Saturday.

Wierman won 75% of his faceoffs, the defense held the Kavanaugh brothers in check, and the offense came up with clutch and timely goals as the Terps beat another ranked opponent to stay undefeated on the year.

For the first time this season, Jonathan Donville didn’t open the scoring, as Griffin Westlin got on the board first 44 seconds into the game to give Notre Dame an early 1-0 lead. Two minues later, the Terps tied the game up with a Wisnauskas man up. Will Angrick gave the Irish a 2-1 lead heading into the second quarter after he scored with 5 minutes left in the opening frame.

The second quarter opened with the Terps scoring twice in the first 3 minutes, with goals by Eric Malever and Logan Wisnauskas to give us our first lead of the game. Pat Kavanaugh tied the game up for Notre Dame a couple minutes later to get his first goal the game. However, the Terps scored 37 seconds later with a goal by Jack Koras, his second goal of the season. Roman Puglise extended the lead a minute later to make it 5-3. Notre Dame made it 5-4 heading into the break with Westlin’s second goal of the game.

After a back and forth first half, the Terps started the second half firing on all cylinders. Kyle Long scored unassisted 31 seconds into the game. Goals by Anthony DeMaio and Jack Brennan made it 3 goals in 1:11 to give the Terps an 8-4 lead. Bryce Walker and Jack Brennan traded goals before the Irish scored three in a row to get Notre Dame within a goal, with goals by the Kavanaugh brothers and Wheaton Jackoboice. Malever extended the lead back to two before Jackoboice answered back. Kyle Long gave the Terps an 11-9 lead that the Irish were never to overcome.

The real starts of the game were the defense. They held the Kavanaugh brothers to 3 goals and 1 assist total and Logan McNaney finished with 12 saves. Ajax Zappitello had three caused turnovers that led all players.

Up next, the Terps face the Great Danes of Albany on March 12th at 12pm back in Maryland Stadium. The game will be streamed on BIG+.
