Terp duo leads Spalding to victory, ready to bask in Maryland atmosphere

SEVERN, M.D.—The Spalding defense forced five turnovers in a thrashing 34-13 win over St. Augustine Prep last Friday as outside linebacker Kellan Wyatt found himself around the ball all night. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound outside linebacker was an integral part in stopping the run as he and defensive end Jason Robertson were all over the field.

“Being at home for the first time in 600-some days, just being back in the atmosphere, it felt great,” Wyatt said after the win. “We stopped the run. That’s what they came here to do and we made them get out of their game plan, so that’s why the score looked the way it does. It starts with practice. I go hard in practice and pretty much this is the easy part, like the answers to the test. I just go hard with repetition.” The secondary wasn’t tested much despite a late first quarter blunder on a trick play, but safety Lavain Scruggs did well to maintain eye discipline while flashing his range in coverage. “Just want to win. Doesn’t matter about the stats, just want to win,” he added. “I feel like we did pretty good, next game we’ve got to do better. Always room to improve but it’s back to 0-0 now. We’re locked in on our next game.”

Wyatt added that there’s nothing he wants to approach that’s different from last season as he takes care of business as a team captain. “I have nothing else to prove. I prove it all out here, I don’t care about ratings or stars. It’s just about getting on the field now.”

Spalding will travel to Broadneck (MD) for their next game on Friday, but after that, both will be in College Park for the Terps’ season-opener.

“Maryland is going great, that’s my gang right there,” Scruggs added. “Maryland shows much love and that’s what made me lock in,” Wyatt added. “Coach [Mike] Locksley actually hit me up before the game just wishing me luck.” Neither is looking to see anything in particular out of the Terps’ defense this season as they look to enjoy the atmosphere.

“I just want to see them win and ball out. Those are my guys,” Scruggs added. “Just fly around. Just be Maryland, don’t beat ourselves.”

Both Scruggs and Wyatt will be in attendance for Maryland’s home opener against West Virginia on Saturday.
