Taulia Tagovailoa Named to Maxwell Award Watch List

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Junior quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa has been named to the watch list for the 85th annual Maxwell Award, it was announced on Monday.


The Maxwell Award, which originated in 1937, recognizes the top Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) player in the country regardless of position.


Tagovailoa had an impressive first year with the Terps in 2020, completing 75-of-122 passes for 1,011 yards while throwing seven touchdown passes in just four games. Tagovailoa led the Big Ten, averaging 13.48 yards per completion and stood second in the league in passing efficiency (138.5) and third in passing yards per game (252.8).


The Ewa Beach, Hawaii native also entered his name in the Maryland single season record books with his performance in 2020, ranking ninth all-time in completion percentage (61.5%) and passing efficiency. Against Minnesota, Tagovailoa threw for 394 yards, the 10th-highest single game mark in program history.


Tagovailoa is the first Maryland quarterback to be on the Maxwell Award Watch List since Danny O’Brien in 2011. Prior to Tagovailoa, the most recent Terp to appear on the watch list for the prestigious award was running back Anthony McFarland Jr. in 2019.


Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced November 1, 2021, while the three finalists for the Maxwell Award will be unveiled November 22, 2021. The winners of the 2021 Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 9, 2021. The formal presentations of the Maxwell Award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Tropicana Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on March 11, 2022.
