Six different Maryland players have been selected to at least one preseason watch list and following Tuesday’s official announcements, two Terps have now each been selected to three watch lists. Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa was named to his third preseason watch list after being named one of 33 quarterbacks to the Manning Award Watch List. Tagovailoa enters his fourth season with the program having already shattered Maryland’s record book while his current career completion percentage is the best of any Big Ten quarterback all-time with a minimum of 875 pass attempts. Tagovailoa was also selected to the Maxwell (best player in the nation) and Davey O’Brien (best quarterback) Watch Lists. Shortly after, linebacker Jaishawn Barham and offensive lineman DJ Glaze were both selected to the Lombardi Award Watch List, awarded to a college football offensive or defensive lineman who exemplifies the character and discipline of NFL Hall of Fame Head Coach Vince Lombardi, in addition to outstanding performance and ability on the field. To be eligible, a player must be a down lineman, end to end, either on offense or defense, setting up no further than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball at the time of the snap or be a linebacker on defense, setting up no further than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage. Barham and Glaze are two of 19 Big Ten players selected to the preseason watch list. This marks the third preseason watch list for Barham, who was also selected to the Bednarik (best defensive player), Butkus (best linebacker) Watch Lists. Barham leads Maryland’s deep and experienced linebacker room into the 2023 season after leading all Big Ten freshmen with 58 tackles one season ago, becoming one of only three Maryland players to start in every appearance. Glaze, meanwhile, is the lone returning starter along an offensive line that remains a work in progress with week three of fall camp now in full swing. Glaze’s experience looms large, though, after starting all 13 games at tackle last fall en route being named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten. Glaze also graded out as the second-highest pass blocking tackle in the Big Ten and seventh in the FBS (85.7). Maryland opens the season against Towson on Sept. 2 for a 3:30 PM kickoff.
