In his final regular-season game as a Terp, Taulia Tagovailoa became the Big Ten's all-time passing leader after posting 272 yards in the first half against Rutgers. Taulia Tagovailoa, who has now thrown for 11,167 career passing yards, surpassed Drew Brees (Purdue) and Adam Weber (Minnesota) before taking down a record set 15 years ago by former Purdue QB Curtis Painter. Tagovailoa broke the record on a six-yard throw to Jeshaun Jones vs. Rutgers late in the second quarter after connecting on nine of his first ten passes. The latest accolade adds to the long list of records held by the star Maryland quarterback. Already in possession of every single season and career passing record in program history, Taulia entered Saturday with a 22-18 record as Maryland’s starting quarterback and has guided the Terps to seven wins in three consecutive seasons for the first time in 15 years. Taulia has also eclipsed 3,000 passing yards for the third consecutive season, throwing for 74 career touchdowns and 10,995 yards heading into Saturday. Taulia is also one of three players to throw for at least 2,500 passing yards in each of the last three seasons and currently leads the Big Ten in all-purpose yards, along with sitting inside the top 25 nationally in passing yards (3,016). “Lia has played an important role in the foundation. Anybody that is a Terp supporter or fan like I have been my whole life knows that the quarterback position over the last ten, 15 years has not been a settled position here, whether it’s injuries, whether it’s transfers. It’s just never been settled,” head coach Mike Locksley said heading into the season finale. “So to be able to have a guy that started four years here, has done some tremendous things in terms of laying a foundation for our program, can’t put a value in what him coming here has done for us. Definitely elevated our program, or at least created a foundation that I think we will be able to build on.” Related Links
