St. John's WR Sean Williams Commits to Maryland

Fresh off his official visit, St. John’s (DC) wide receiver Sean Williams has committed to Maryland.

Williams committed to Maryland over offers from Boston College, Cincinnati, Duke, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Northwestern, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and West Virginia among others.

Williams was one of five midweek official visitors for Maryland and becomes the third wide receiver in the Terps’ 2023 class, joining St. Frances (MD) prospect Ryan Manning and Irvington (NJ) prospect Nasir Addison.

Williams was originally slated to officially visit Rutgers before switching his visit for Maryland and was originally slated to visit Wake Forest this weekend, which was since canceled. With former teammate and sophomore running back Colby McDonald hosting him on the visit, Williams committed to Maryland on Thursday morning before announcing on Saturday afternoon. The 6-foot-1 wideout has been a frequent visitor in College Park dating back to last summer. Williams added he had the feeling he'd commit on the first full day on campus during his official as he detailed what led him to switch his official visit schedule.

“At the last second, they showed a lot of love and they took ownership for not expressing that they really want me as a player,” Williams told Inside the Black and Gold last week. “Them able to take ownership showed what kind of character their program has and it really spoke on me, it really showed that I should at least try Maryland which is home.”

Williams attended a pair of home games last fall and returned to campus in late January, along with a subsequent visit to College Park during spring practice. Running backs coach Elijah Brooks has run point in Williams’ recruitment given their prior relationship. “He recruited me to go to DeMatha but I didn’t pick it but then I realized he went to Maryland. I’d say we’ve had a relationship really since my sophomore year, that’s when we started talking a lot and then junior year it went up a lot,” Williams said back on January 31. Williams will possibly become the fifth former Cadet on Maryland’s 2023 roster, joining Rakim Jarrett, Colby McDonald, Antwain Littleton and Taizse Johnson.

“Their connection with St. John’s is real genuine. A lot of us can tell they want to actually get our players up there to make the difference,” he added back in January. “It’s very different because I think I got four former teammates up there. I see it a lot because I follow them, I talk to them a lot so I can see the program has St. John’s but just at the college level. Lot of my boys up there making a difference for them.”

Williams added Maryland sees him "playing the H, which the slot mostly and a hybrid inside-outside type of guy" as he joins Manning, Addison, St. Peters Prep (NJ) quarterback Robert ‘Champ’ Long, Madison County (FL) cornerback Jonathan Akins and McDonogh guard/center Tamarus Walker.

Williams is not yet rated by On3, but drew a three-star rating and an 85 overall from 247Sports.
