Maryland played host on Sunday to the next crop of talent coming out of St. Frances with the new indoor facility catching the eye of several. 2023 receiver Lamar Patterson, 2023 safety Christian Garrett 2023 defensive lineman Dashawn Womack, 2024 CB Ify Obidegwu, 2024 offensive tackle Logan Bennett, 2024 cornerback Kevyn Humes, 2024 athlete Rischall Vaughns Jr., 2024 linebacker Darius Jones, 2024 quarterback Michael Van Buren, 2024 defensive back Edrees Farooq and 2024 defensive back Blake Woodby all made it to College Park while 2025 WR Emmanuel Dyson notched his first offer on the trip. While it was an opportunity for the group to soak in the early stages of their recruitments, the ability to take visits with their teammates was an aspect that didn’t go unnoticed.
“It was cool doing it with the guys I’ll be with for the next 3, 4 years and probably college. Good bond with them,” Blake Woodby told Inside the Black & Gold. Blake, the younger brother of West Virginia pledge Ty Woodby, had his favorite part from Sunday’s trip though.
“Probably the locker room. It was just nice, they got a little turtle shell. It’s really cool,” Woodby added. 2024 cornerback Kevyn Humes had his own favorite part. “There’s a turf portion where under the bottom, it’s electric so it counts how many steps you take in the 40,” Humes added. “That’s my favorite part. Everything was electric. Some stuff I hadn’t seen before, some stuff I didn’t even know exist.”
Elite cornerback Ify Obidegwu, whose older cousin once suited up for Maryland, called the trip “beautiful. Top-tier facility.” Sunday gave Obidegwu a chance to connect with inside linebackers coach Brawley Evans, who has taken over recruiting the Baltimore powerhouse. “Talked to coach Brawley. We were talking about going back up this summer, games. Good coaching staff, good environment all around.” Director of recruiting Marcus Berry also left an impression on Obidegwu. “He’s a nice guy, real cool. I like his poise.”
Rischall Vaughns was impressed with his trip to the nearby program as well. “Saw a lot of new things. There’s so much more that they didn’t even show us because they want us to come back up there, see new things. I live pretty close.” 2024 cornerback Edrees Farooq, the younger first cousin of Oklahoma signee Jalil Farooq, backed up the fun trip.
“It was wonderful. That was my first time putting on the speed flex, too. And it felt good to put on Maryland, too, represent my city.”
Maryland will work hard to keep the crew of talent home as St. Frances’ 2024 defensive back room is littered with future four and five-star prospects.
“I like the football team a lot. It’s my hometown, been watching them my whole life. My big cousin went up there too,” Obidegwu added. “It’s definitely under consideration. They have the potential to make the College Football Playoff now,” Humes added. Farooq’s first impression of the staff also left a mark.
“They’re cool. They make me work hard which is what you want.”
