Maryland basketball will now look to fill a second assistant coach vacancy this offseason. Grant Billmeier is set to become the next head coach at NJIT, first reported by Jeff Goodman. Billmeier, 38, had been a consistent target for the head coaching vacancy with buzz increasing in recent days that head coach Kevin Willard was in line to lose another assistant. It’s a key loss for Maryland as Billmeier, known as a proven big man coach, was instrumental in Julian Reese’s development over the last season. The move for Billmeier gives him his first head coaching opportunity as he returns to his roots. Raised in Pennington, New Jersey, Billmeier starred at St. Patrick’s High School before guiding Seton Hall to two NCAA Tournaments as a player. Billmeier then returned to Seton Hall on two separate stints, but most recently as an assistant before making the move with Willard to College Park last offseason. Billmeier’s extensive history and recruiting connections throughout New Jersey made him an ideal fit for the NJIT head coaching job. Billmeier also becomes the fifth assistant under Kevin Willard to become a head coach, joining Shaheen Holloway (Seton Hall), Donald Copeland (Wagner), Tony Skinn (George Mason) and Dan McHale (former Eastern Kentucky coach). Willard, meanwhile, replaced Tony Skinn with former DeMatha head coach and Virginia Tech assistant Mike Jones while the hire is still yet to be announced by the program. Related Links
