RB Harry Dalton, TE Preston Howard among Maryland's inactives for B1G opener vs. UCLA

Maryland football is set to open conference play this weekend when they face UCLA, yet they will do so with multiple inactives.

Both tight end Preston Howard and running back Harry Dalton III join running back DeJuan Williams and edge rusher Zahir Mathis among the notable absences as the conference released availability reports for the first time this season.

The absence of both Dalton and Williams adds another layer of questions for the running attack with Iverson Howard, who battled injuries in the week two road win vs. UConn, now in line to draw the overwhelming share of the carries to anchor a running back room that averaged just 2.83 yards per carry against Virginia Tech. Saturday also marks Howard's second game missed in his three seasons with the program, excluding his 2022 redshirt season, after going down in the second of the non-conference finale. Maryland will also turn to freshman and converted linebacker Jianni Davis, along with former baseball utility Liam Wilson to round out the depth behind Howard.

Both cornerback Dontay Joyner and wide receiver Josiah Teasley remain inactive while being able to practice with the team, while running back Terrez Worthy, defensive lineman Delmar White, wide receiver Sean Williams, cornerback Lloyd Irvin and DJ Samuels are among the others still sidelined and have yet to appear in a game this season.

Wide receiver Mikey Matthews is the notable absence for UCLA as he entered the weekend sitting fourth on the team with four catches this season for 88 yards, while he's added another 31 yards on three punt returns.

Tight end Josh Phifer, who started in the season opener against Cal, is one of three players ruled questionable ahead of kickoff for the Bruins, while Montana State transfer and nickel corner Jhase McMillan is probable in the initial injury report.

Wednesday marked the first injury report released by the program during the 2026 season, in line with updated Big Ten rules. Teams are required to submit injury reports on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in addition to Saturday gamedays.
