QB Khristian Martin Sees Fit, Mutual Interest with Maryland’s Offense

Maryland has jumped into the mix for a long list of quarterbacks next cycle with St. Frances (MD) four-star Mike Van Buren leading the way, but the staff was able to get Highland Springs (VA) three-star Khristian Martin for his first gameday visit over the weekend. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound dual threat QB has been a prospect that has long impressed the staff with his arm strength and decision-making and was able to feel the concentrated efforts to build the relationship during his visit. “I had a great tour, great hospitality, great football game,” he told Inside the Black and Gold. “I would say the coaches felt like a family environment. They treat you like their own, like you’re already a player there. Then the ability during the game to overcome adversity to play with a backup quarterback, I think that stuck out too.” Head coach Mike Locksley and offensive coordinator Dan Enos have been able to start building the relationship, but its receiver coach Gunter Brewer leading the way with near-daily contact. “Me and coach Brewer talk a lot, he’s a great guy to talk to. Great advice, he’ll tell you about the program, those type of things.” Martin was able to sit down with Locksley ahead of the game. “I got a good relationship with coach Locks, mom has a good relationship with coach Locks. It was mostly about how school is going, a little bit of football then I had some questions for them of course.” Martin then got a chance to watch Maryland’s offense where backup Billy Edwards stepped in for Taulia Tagovailoa to guide the team to its sixth win. While the offense wasn’t able to remain as efficient as it’s been in recent weeks, Martin still sees him fitting into the Terps’ scheme. “They do a lot of different things. The offense runs through the quarterback, so that’s always something you want to play in. I was watching them on TV too so I don’t think I saw a complete picture what they do on a weekly basis because they had a backup quarterback, but I still liked everything that I saw.” Maryland is among the early schools under consideration for the Highland Springs standout. “I’m very interested. I consider them one of my top schools. I like it there, that was great.” With offers from Virginia, Virginia Tech and Indiana among others, it’s Maryland who reaches out the most. “I’d say I probably talk to Maryland the most. It’ll be coach Brewer sometimes. I sit on the phone with coach Enos. Maybe every two weeks or so I talk with coach Locks so all three of those guys are mainly recruiting me, I’ve had a good amount of communication with them.” Martin won’t travel far for his next visit this upcoming weekend. “I’ll be at UVA next weekend and then I may be back at Maryland again on the 19th.” Martin is rated a three-star prospect and an 84 overall by On3, sitting as the 74th-best quarterback nationally.
