Maryland is sitting at 19 commitments in the 2024 class and welcomed several local targets to campus this past weekend, headlined by four-star defensive lineman Ernest Willor. While a long list of recruits connected with the staff during the week one win, Maryland will welcome a key target back to campus later this month.
After making a cross-country trip at the end of August to check out one finalist, Quince Orchard (MD) three-star edge Jaylen Harvey will take a shorter trip for his next unofficial visit with Maryland still the school expected to host him next. Harvey, a 6-foot-2, 250-pound edge rusher, will now visit Maryland next Friday night when the Terps host Virginia for a 7 PM kickoff.
Harvey's most recent visit came to USC at the end of August as he and his parents watched the Trojans take down San Jose State in the week zero matchup.
The USC visit was expected to be the final visit for Harvey as he and his parents have bunkered down through August awaiting a final decision, but that’s no longer the case as Harvey is bouncing between his top suitors. NIL played a big role in Harvey’s recruitment through the summer as notably, Penn State has had to play catch up since their early June official visit.
Penn State has since made its pitch and tried to incentivize Harvey by potentially making him their first recruit with an NIL contract, though the Nittany Lions now enter September as the wildcard contender.
Sources continue to tell IBG that Maryland and USC still have full support from parents down the stretch, though Penn State could prove to be the final school to host him. Following his trip to Maryland, Harvey could make his way back to Penn State for the White Out against Iowa the following week. Outside linebacker coach James Thomas has led the way for Maryland as the area and position recruiter while head coach Mike Locksley has been involved.
“ Locksley is doing a good job. He’s trying to win a championship and that’s what I’m trying to do, so we have a really good connection,” Harvey told IBG last month.
As for where Harvey is leaning, that’s bounced around which is now the primary reason for Harvey’s delay.
“Bouncing,” a source added. “He really likes all three schools.”
Jaylen Harvey is rated a three-star prospect and an 89 overall by On3, sitting as the 11th-best player in Maryland.
