Despite the baseball season not beginning until Friday, Maryland baseball is already dealing with the injury bug as head coach Matt Swope will look elsewhere to fill his pitching rotation. News broke this weekend that RHP James Gladden will be having Tommy John Surgery on his right arm and will miss the 2024 season for the Terps, per a team spokesperson. It's a sizable blow for Matt Swope's squad as the sophomore Gladden was set to serve as a major piece out of the bullpen. A VCU transfer, Gladden was a big part of VCU's 2023 season. He made six starts over 16 appearances and finished the season with a 5.43 ERA. While leading the Rams in wins last season with 5, he struck out 45 hitters in 61.1 innings thrown, a very impressive number. Gladden attended Archbishop Curley in Baltimore and was the fourth ranked right handed pitcher out of Maryland in the Class of 2022, per Perfect Game. Gladden becomes the second Maryland pitcher who will miss the 2024 season with Tommy John after Kyle McCoy had the same surgery last summer. Maryland will open the season on the road with a three-game series beginning Friday against Georgia Southern in Statesboro, GA. Related Links
