Player Profile: Adama Tambedou, what to expect from Buzz Williams fresham forward

Maryland Men's basketball head coach Buzz Williams spent his first full offseson crafting one of the top recruiting classes in the country. One of those players that helped Williams accomplish that success was Adama Tambedou.

Tambedou, the 6-foot-7 New Englander forward, comes into College Park as a freshman this upcoming season. Tambedou was a four-star recruit coming out of the Connecticut high school Putnam Science Academy, where he was ranked second in the state, and 108th in the nation. During his tenure with the Mustang's, he racked up attractive accolades that helped him get to the Terps, including being a part of the 2025-26 National Prep Championship Series All-America First Team Honors, MVP of the 2026 Iverson Classic, and helped the Mustangs win their fifth National Prep national championship in his junior year.

During highschool, Tambedou had a big offensive paint presence. Consistently staying grounded and poised under the rim, where he would wait for defenders to bite and go up for an easy two, while also willing his way with the regular two-handed dunks. On the defensive side, Tambedou has displayed a real tenacity and agressiveness when hunting for the ball. Chasedown blocks, meeting opponents at the rim, etc., is where Tambedou shows a lot of that grit that coaches love to see.

As a freshman, Tambedou will be alongside another forward freshman, five-star Baba Oladotun. Tambedou, being surrounded with veteran experience, puts himself in a great spot to learn in the offseason and upcoming season to really hone in on expanding and building skills that you need in order to compete in the B1G 10.

Tambedou has high expectations for himself too for who he wants to be as a basketball player, while talking to former Maryland Men's Basketball great Walt Williams in an interview, he talked about wanting to be a top-10 player in the country and his motivation was simply put as "why not," according to the Maryland Athletics 'Meet the Terps' interview.
