William Penn (PA) offensive tackle Michael McMonigle hit Maryland's radar this spring thanks in part to head coach Mike Locksley's long-standing connections considering fifth-year Maryland coach once played with Russell Stoner at Towson. That gave the staff a strong connection before taking the chance to scout the 6-foot-6 lineman in person last month.
"They came out to watch me, coach Brewer did come watch to see me on the field then I came down to the camp," McMonigle told IBG. That camp visit came this past Saturday before Maryland extended an offer to McMonigle, joining Iowa State, ODU and Syracuse among others.
"I talked to coach Locksley afterward and got a little tour of the place, it was awesome. They offered me and talked to me about how my official visit will go on the 16th. He also knows my coach, he played with him in college so we talked about that a little bit. I asked a few questions, my dad asked a few questions. I’m really excited to talk to the players and ask them questions about how a day in their lives go because I think that’ll give me really good insight on the school itself."
Brewer has primarily driven McMonigle's recruitment thus far as the two have gradually built their relationship. "He’s called me a few times the last few weeks, texting me a good amount so he’s been good keeping in contact with me."
McMonigle will return to Maryland for an unofficial on Wendesday where he'll get another look at the program ahead of his extended trip. Other than that, the only other school McMonigle currently plans to officially visit this month is Syracuse, which is set for this upcoming weekend. This will be the third trip to check out the Orange with the two regional schools battling it out.
"I’m definitely open to other schools. I’m going to wait to commit for a little while. Not too long, but I’m not going to rush it. I definitely want to do it before my season starts. I'm thinking early July."
