Archbishop Spalding (MD) took care of Malvern Prep (PA) on Friday night in a game where three Terp verbals shared the field. For senior lineman Malvern Prep Coltin Deery, the imposing center was once again playing both ways and was a mainstay in the rotation as the 6-foot-3, 275-pound lineman consistently won the battles in the trenches. Deery has lined up at both center and defensive line since his sophomore season but was encouraged with his individual play despite the loss.
“I felt like I played good. It’s tough going both ways against a team like Spalding but we learned from it, and we got our first game back in the [Inter-Academic] after two years so I’m excited,” Deery told Inside the Black and Gold. “A big thing for our [offensive] line is getting out in the open. We just started with outside zone, and we’ve been progressively getting better at it and just getting more nasty along the line so it’s good.”
Friday night’s game marks the final non-conference game of the season as Malvern Prep returns to conference play with a road matchup against William Penn (PA) set for Saturday. “I think I just want to be able to go out there and kick ass in the [Inter-Academic]. They didn’t let us in last year so think it’s time to get a little payback,” Deery added.
While Deery has conference play on the mind, one thing that isn’t under consideration is his recruitment. The Pennsylvania lineman committed to Maryland back in mid-March to give the Terps a potential multi-year starter along the offensive line and Deery said he’s told his head coach not to respond to other schools showing interest. “I kind of told my coach to tell every other school that I’m locked in with Maryland,” he added.
Deery was back in College Park for the week two win over Howard and will return for the Penn State game on November 6, giving him another chance to reconnect with the staff before checking out the game. “It was awesome, love the coaching staff and the ability to build a bond.” Deery shares his thoughts on the Terps’ season. “Obviously [Iowa] was tough. I was on a retreat, so I didn’t get to watch the game, but I watched right when I got my phone. It’s a tough one but they keep continuing to build. Prayers for Dontay [Demus].”
Deery is still planning to wrestle at Maryland as the 2019 state champ at 285-pounds has built an accomplished wrestling career through high school. Deery has also finalized his official visit to Maryland for the weekend of December 12, though will not enroll early. “School won’t allow it,” he added.
Deery was recently bumped from an 85 to 87 overall by 247Sports and still sits as a three-star prospect, sitting as the 24th-best interior lineman in the country.
