Maryland has landed Coffeyville offensive tackle Kevin Kalonji, giving the unit another depth piece as offensive line coach Brian Braswell rebuilds his unit heading into the 2023 season. "I just told them I’m coming. I’m staying home. This is home for me. It’s about time to make it straight so better to make it at home," Kalonji said after his decision. After officially visiting Houston beginning June 22 and Maryland beginning June 24, Kalonji included both schools in his top group alongside South Carolina as Cal, Rutgers and Ole Miss were among the other Power Five schools chasing the 6-foot-6, 330-pound tackle. Kalonji gave his verbal to the staff late last week before announcing on Sunday evening. “I was with coach Bras and a couple others on the staff. I talked to coach Locksley for a bit. We talked about what’s their plan for me. It was really productive. is an amazing guy. We built a relationship for a long time now. You can tell he’s a nice guy because he’s going to tell you what he’s thinking, what his plan is. And his NFL experience, sent people to the NFL,” Kalonji said after his official visit. Kalonji began his high school career at Archbishop Carroll (DC) before transferring to Avalon (MD), giving him ample familiarity with Maryland considering he was able to make the short trip to unofficially visit out of high school. The connections to Maryland don’t end there, though, as Kalonji also lived with new Maryland basketball forward Mady Traore and a host family during high school, giving him a familiar face to lean on once he arrives in College Park. Arriving in the program as a right tackle, Kalonji has three years to play two and a long-term piece as the unit restocks ahead of the season. Kalonji becomes the latest addition along the offensive line this cycle, joining Gottlieb Ayedze, Corey Bullock, Marcus Dumervill and Mike Purcell after watching a pair of starters elect to enter the transfer portal earlier this spring. Maryland returns DJ Glaze alongside four new starters for the upcoming season, and while Dumervil can play both tackle and guard, Kalonji gives the room another tackle to shore up the future starting position with Andre Roye and Ja’Kavion Nonar bolstering the depth.
