One Terp in the NBA honored, another on the move

Maryland fans will be able to watch at least one former player during NBA All-Star weekend.

Former star point guard Jahmir Young was named to his second consecutive Next Up Game selection, while he also joins James Bouknight, Blake Hinson and Ethan Thompson as participants in the three-point shooting contest. Four G League players are selected to compete in the NBA G League State Farm Three-Point contest during the weekend with coverage set to begin at 2:30 PM on Saturday, Feb. 14 at NBA Crossover.

In his second season in the G League, now with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, Young has become an even more efficient scorer after averaging 26.6 points and 9.7 assists on 46.2% shooting, along with 36% shooting from three and 80.6% from the free throw line. His 26.6 points rank second in the G League, half a point behind Mac McClung, while his 9.7 assists rank third as he looks to make his case to become a full-time NBA player.

While Young look to crack into the league, another will look to settle in on his fourth team during his NBA career after veteran Kevin Huerter was involved in a three-team trade on Tuesday and ahead of Thursday's trade deadline. This marks the second consecutive year he's been traded on February 3.

Huerter joins Dario Saric as the second piece headed from Chicago to the Detroit Pistons with Jaden Ivey and Mike Conley headed to Chicago. The sharpshooter adds exactly that to a Pistons' roster looking add additional scoring as Huerter, 27, is averaging 10.8 points on 45.5% shooting - his best percentage since his first year with the Kings in 2022-23.

Now on a team that ranks 27th in the league in three-point attempts, it also gives Huerter a chance to carve a role on an expiring deal with the Terp headed into the second half of the 2025-26 season on the final year of his four-year, $65 million contract he signed while with the Atlanta Hawks.

Huerter also moves on from a play-in contender to a Detroit team with a 5.5-game lead in the Eastern Conference standings, giving him a chance to impact a hopeful deep playoff run.

Huerter is one of five active players, including Young, in the NBA after the New York native became the 19th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft after a stellar showing at the combine. This marks his third NBA trade since joining the NBA after being traded to Sacramento in exchange for Justin Holiday, Moe Harkless and a first-round pick back in 2022. Huerter was then traded to Chicago in exchange for Zach LaVine and a second-round pick ahead of the 2025 trade deadline.
