Non-rev report: Maryland fall sports look to get back on track this weekend

Men’s Soccer

23rd-ranked Maryland men’s soccer 6-0-2 (2-0-1 Big Ten) continues to stay hot as they remain undefeated. Their 4-1 win against Northwestern extended their unbeaten streak to eight, marking their best start to a season since 2017. The Terps held the lead against the Wildcats for the whole game and set the tone in the first half when they scored two goals back to back 84 seconds apart and left Northwestern scoreless in the second half.

Maryland will hit the road to California to take on UCLA Friday at 8 p.m., who it lost to in the 2024 Big Ten tournament and hasn’t beaten since 2017.

Women’s Soccer

The two-game win streak was short-lived for Maryland women’s soccer after their struggle on the West Coast. The Terps lost 3-0 to USC and 1-0 to 4th-ranked UCLA. Maryland struggled offensively throughout both games and generated very few shots, with only four against USC’s 15 and two against UCLA’s 13.

The Terps did put up a fight against UCLA, one of the nation’s top teams, as they held them scoreless until late in the second half. "Overall I'm proud of the way the girls played today. I know we lost the game but I think there's definitely a lot of things to build on here," head coach Micheal Marchiano said after the UCLA game.

Although Maryland left the West Coast scoreless and has a 6-6 overall record, the Terps can hopefully bounce back at home against Illinois on Sunday at noon.

Volleyball

After a strong finish to nonconference play, Maryland volleyball has had difficulty in Big Ten matchups, losing 0-3 to Iowa and 0-3 to 1st-ranked Nebraska in their first two conference games. Offensively, the Terps were unable to win a set in either match, while defensively, they struggled to stop the Hawkeyes and Cornhuskers.

Maryland, 7-5 overall and 0-2 in the Big Ten, will look to break its losing streak when it faces Rutgers on the road Friday at 7 p.m.

Field Hockey

Tenth-ranked Maryland field hockey won 1-0 against twelfth-ranked Michigan in their second Big Ten match up of the season, marking the Terps first 2-0 start in Big Ten play since 2022.

After a scoreless first half against the Wolverines, an assist by junior Macy Bradford in the third quarter created the first and only goal of the game by sophomore Ella Gaitan. "Our press and our defense back there is a brick wall. Nobody's getting through them," Bradford said.

The Terps’ four game win streak ended with a 1-2 nonconference loss to Princeton, making their overall record 6-3. Maryland didn’t score until the fourth quarter, allowing the Tigers to take the lead.

Maryland returns to Big Ten play Friday at 3 p.m. against Ohio State.
