Women’s basketball
It’s still the offseason for head coach Brenda Frese, but Maryland women’s basketball drew headlines on Wednesday morning after picking up a commitment from four-star Mimi Thiero.
Thiero, the younger sister of Lakers forward and former Maryland target Adou Thiero, officially visited College Park this past weekend and chose Maryland over Clemson, Louisville, Kentucky, Michigan and Vanderbilt among others. The four-star eclipsed 1,000 career points during her junior season, averaging 23.1 points, 16.7 rebounds, 3.9 steals, 3.8 blocks and 3.2 assists per game while drawing over 50 offers.
While her dad also played basketball in college, Mimi’s mom, Marian, previously played for the Washington Mystics after being drafted in the third round of the 2006 WNBA Draft.
Thiero now joins Sidwell Friends (DC) five-star Jordyn Jackson as the lone commitments in the 2026 class.
Men’s Soccer
Maryland men’s soccer extended its win streak Friday after defeating Wisconsin 3-1, to kick off conference play and win its fifth consecutive Big Ten opener.
The win was sealed after freshman Ritarita Rocket scored the third goal for Maryland in the second half. "Rocket is an extremely talented player who's making a difference every time he steps on the field. Tonight, we really needed him and he's just picked up the pace and the physicality of college soccer in a good way. I thought he really helped our team tonight,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said postgame. The Terps return home to play Pitt on Friday night at 7 PM.
Women’s Soccer
The rough patch has continued for Maryland women’s soccer. On Thursday, the Terps lost their conference opener to eighth-ranked Penn State 4-0, marking their third straight loss. The Nittany Lions are historically a team the Terps have trouble defeating, entering the matchup looking for their first head-to-head win since 2004.
Maryland will face Indiana on Thursday at 7 PM in hopes of snapping its losing streak.
Volleyball
Maryland Volleyball, after five consecutive victories, lost its win streak to Wake Forest 3-1 on Sunday. But the Terps bounced back with a 3-2 win over Coppin State on Tuesday. Junior Eva Rohrbach, senior Ajack Malual and sophomore Duru Gökçen each totaled 11 or more kills that contributed to the victory. The Terps next matchup is Friday at home at 6:30 PM against Seton Hall, marking the last non-conference game.
Field Hockey
Tenth-ranked Maryland field hockey won against both Pennsylvania 3-1 and 13th-ranked Saint Joseph’s 1-0 in the Terrapin Invitational. Sophomore Ella Gaitan scored the lone goal late in the fourth quarter that secured the win against Saint Joseph’s.
Junior Alyssa Klebasko received Co-Defensive Player of the Week after recording a career-high six saves against Penn, and allowing only one goal across both games. “I think confidence is contagious. I think it starts in the back and works its way up the field. We never give up. Even though it's late in the game, we're going to fight until that last second and that was evident today,” Klebasko said.
The Terps remain home for their conference opener Friday against 16th-ranked Penn State at 5 PM.
