As Mike Locksley enters his seventh season as the head coach at Maryland, 2025 will mark the first season the program enters with new faces at both offensive
2025 marks the first season of the Mike Locksley era that Maryland football will have new faces taking over both as the new offensive and defensive coordinator.
Pep Hamilton was the first new hire announced this offseason after joining the program as offensive coordinator, taking over the title that Josh Gattis once held before moving on to Syracuse as an analyst this offseason. Hamilton now steps back into the college game for the first time since 2018, his second season as Michigan’s passing game coordinator, where he’s left his imprint on the Terps’ offense heading into 2025.
“Experience. He always talks about grown man business,” offensive lineman Isaiah Wright noted. “The approach that we have and the intention every day, he brings so much passion and so much commitment to the game. He’s always in that building, always trying to better the quarterbacks, the offensive line, especially. He's in every group chat, giving us words of wisdom, I'm saying so it's a huge privilege. And he's just willing to help each and every one of us on and off the field. So it's an honor to have him as a coach.”
Hamilton most recently served as the Texans’ offensive coordinator in 2022, his first of three consecutive seasons in the NFL after serving as the Chargers’ QB coach in College Park. He’s one of several adding NFL flavor to the Terps’ coaching staff this fall with Hal Hunter, Jarrod James and Chili Davis all joining the program to bolster the offensive and special teams.
The defense added its own NFL experience following the addition of Ted Monachino, who served on North Carolina’s defensive staff over the last two seasons. But after stints with the Jaguars, Ravens, Colts and Bears through the 2000s before taking over as the Falcons’ OLB coach, Monachino has developed a reputation as a workhorse as he now looks to lead a young defense along with taking over the outside linebacker room in 2025.
“He's somebody that has great energy, and he brings the great energy to the defense,” linebacker Daniel Wingate added. “He allows us to play hard and fast. With the play calling, he’s made it to where it's very simple for us to just go out there and run around and play fast, you know, how football is supposed to be played, and allow us to use our abilities to make plays and force turnovers.
“I've seen a tremendous, tremendous amount of ability to command the room,” safety Jalen Huskey added. “Having those guys, and have seen that type of leadership for us, especially because our team is a bit of a younger team with newer pieces, has been tremendous for us, and I think it's tremendous for our success.”
