On the final day that the transfer portal is open, an expected departure officially materialized for head coach Buzz Williams after junior guys Myles Rice departed the program and re-entered the transfer portal.
Rice enters with one year of eligibility remaining after the 6-foot-3, 185-pound point guard started in four games and appeared in 17 in his lone season in College Park.
After overcoming cancer to begin his college basketball career, Rice rose to stardom in his first and final full season at Washington State where he averaged 14.8 points and 3.8 assists while starting in all 35 games for the Cougars.
Rice landed at Indiana in 2024-25 where he fell out of the starting lineup, averaging 10.1 points in 27.5 minutes while making 25 starts in 2024-25 before re-entering the transfer portal.
Buzz Williams previously noted he was already in heavy pursuit of Rice during his first stint in the portal while Rice was on a visit to Texas A&M when Maryland hired the Aggies head coach, giving the staff a strong relationship to pick back up once the move to College Park became official. Rice then materialized into the first non-Aggie to announce his transfer to Maryland where he was expected to step into the vacant point guard role, but expectations never materialized.
After becoming part of the group of Terps who started the regular season sidelined due to injury, Rice started in just four games during his lone season at Maryland and averaged 5.6 points and 2.1 rebounds before missing the final 12 games of the regular season.
Maryland has since turned to the transfer portal to restock the room with former Arkansas guard DJ Wagner and Tennessee guard Bishop Boswell leading the 2026-27 backcourt, while Rice has one year of eligibility remaining.
