Milford Mill HC Reggie White talks about Amory Hills’ commitment to Maryland

Maryland didn’t have to go far to land their newest offensive line pledge after Milford Mill (MD) three-star lineman Amory Hills made the decision to suit up for the in-state school. Maryland had been in the mix with the 6-foot-4.5 lineman dating back to his junior year after he and teammate Khalil Wilkins made their way to campus for the Penn State game. Hills was also previously familiar with the Terps’ staff having camped in College Park, giving assistant Brian Braswell a chance to get a closer feel for his in-state 2025 target along with giving Hills a different glimpse into the program.

While Penn State and Virginia Tech were also in the mix, the relationship between Hills and Braswell carried weight all the way into decision time. “He made his decision on Friday then told Maryland I think this week,” Reggie White, who played four seasons in the NFL before becoming Milford Mill’s head coach in 2003. “He celebrated with his parents over the weekend so it was a good time.”

As for why Hills got on board with Maryland, there’s little uncertainty.

“It was coach Bras, man. He just recruited that kid like hew as his own. Amory was getting calls from Locksley and the other coaches but Braswell showing up in the building and just talking to him, I know that guy really wanted him and saw potential in him to be an All-Big Ten guy.”

And for White, having one of his players suit up for a pair of coaches he’s held longstanding relationships with is a move he’s more than on board with.

“Bras has been around the game for a long time, same with Locksley and I’ve known those guys quite a while so I would hope that the relationship that we all had helped influence his decision a little bit. He saw how comfortable I was around both of those guys and he really became just as comfortable so that was a good thing,” he added.

Maryland held off West Virginia for an official visit beginning June 13 where head coach Mike Locksley and his staff turned to his local recruits as potential critical pieces in what’s long expected to be the next foundational class for the program. The chance to suit up with other top local talent RB like Iverson Howard and QB Malik Washington also carried a bit of weight for Hills down the stretch.

“A lot of his comrades from around the area were committing and going together, especially that quarterback who will be there for four or five years – even though I think that quarterback could start right now. Any time you have someone protecting your blindside, it’s good to be friends with him.”

Hills projects as an interior lineman in College Park, though White added that “he could be 6-5, 6-6 and in the 305-310 range.” Hills made his way to both Penn State and Virginia Tech for official visits with his trip to Maryland sandwiched in between, but both official visits gave each staff a chance to work with the offensive line target in camp setting. For Maryland, Hills had made his way to College Park last summer to give the staff the familiarity heading into his junior season as the new Maryland pledge looks to become more consistent in his final year of high school football.

“His twitch, getting faster in all his drills. He’s a dominant guy, he’s going to dominate at that level so just getting focused and being committed to being dominant. No plays off.”

And while Hills works to take the next step on the field, he’s working on getting his way to College Park in January.

“We just had one guy do that this past year so we have the blueprint and we’re going to try to make it happen for Amory.”

Amory Hills became the 18th pledge in Maryland’s class and is rated a three-star prospect and 85 overall by On3.Related Links
