Mervo WR Justin Devaughn shuts recruitment down, commits to Maryland

One day after releasing his top six schools, Mervo (MD) three-star wide receiver Justin Devaughn pivoted to take the next step in his recruitment, opting to give Maryland his verbal pledge one day after leaving campus. Devaughn, a 6-foot, 170-pound wideout out of Baltimore, announced his commitment to Maryland over Minnesota, Syracuse and Pitt while Virginia Tech and Indiana made his recent top six. "I got on the phone with coach Locks this morning, that Sunday morning call," he told IBG. "All I could think about was how they made me feel a part of their family and how everybody apprecaiaed me for coming. I feltt comfortable with the coaches. Everything was perfect and they showed me they really want me there. And I went for it. It's business." The news comes fresh off Devaughn's official visit to Maryland where the staff, including lead recruiter Josh Gattis, rolled out the red carpet for the Baltimore native beginning May 30. Devaughn told IBG the highlight of his official visit was his sit-down with offensive coordinator Josh Gattis as they watched film before watching a video from Olympic star Grant Holloway, who Gattis recruited out of high school. “I didn’t see that coming. We had a film session and was comparing me to athletes he had and he used to recruit him. Coach Gattis used to recruit him back in like 2016. He said my playstyle reminded me of his, so he went from that then put the video on the screen," he added. After that, Maryland pointed to rising senior Tai Felton as Devaughn's comp in College Park. “I definitely could see me fitting in because they’re such a passing team and my speed and agility fits with what they do,” he added. While Maryland already has one two-sport athlete on the way with Bud Coombs in the fold for both football and baseball, Devaughn was able to meet with head coach Andrew Valmon during his official visit where he looks to join the Terps' track and field team in addition to football. A state champion and one of the top-ranked juniors in the country in track, Devaughn posted a new PR of 13.91 in the 110-meter hurdle and 38.7 seconds in the 300-meter hurdle to secure his invitation to nationals in mid-June. “I talked to them for a bit. That was the first time I got to get in contact with them. We had a good conversation. He answered all the questions I had for him so I’m all set.” Justin Devaughn is rated a three-star prospect and an 89 overall by On3, checking in as the 11th-best prospect in Maryland and the nation's 49th-best wide receiver. He becomes the seventh commitment in Maryland's 2025 recruiting class, joining RB Bud Coombs, LB CJ Smith, IOL Kahlil Stewart, CB Jett White, DL Braheem Battles and SAF Julien Horton. Related Links
