Maryland women’s basketball drew a four-seed in the Spokane region of the NCAA Tournament and will host Delaware, the reigning CAA champs, on Friday.
If Maryland advances past the Blue Hens, Maryland will host the winner of Virginia Tech-Florida Gulf Coast.
After last season’s crushing Sweet 16 defeat against Texas, head coach Brenda Frese and the Terps’ mission have left no doubt about what their goal was for this season. “Our motto this season is ‘Complete the mission.’ For us, it’s going as far as we can, each and every game getting better, building upon each game we get to play in,” Frese said back in October.
Maryland enters the NCAA Tournament 21-8 (13-4) overall but battle-tested with 12 matchups against top-25 opponents this season, including five consecutive ranked matchups to end the season. After drawing a four-seed in the Big Ten Tournament, Maryland suffered their first Big Ten conference tournament opening loss in a 62-51 loss to Indiana back.
Maryland will hope to capitalize on two full weeks to recover and reset to prepare for the Blue Hens and do so led by Angel Reese, who was named First Team All-Big Ten and All-Big Ten Defensive Team after registering 16 double-doubles this season. Reese was one of six Terps named to all-conference teams, joining Chloe Bibby, Katie Benzan, Ashley Owusu and Diamond Miller. Shyanne Sellers was also named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team by both media and coaches, along with named Big Ten Sixth Player of the Year.
Maryland is 36-15 in 16 appearances under head coach Brenda Frese. This is Maryland’s 12th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and the Terps have earned a top-four seed 21 of their 29 overall appearances.
Maryland Athletics lifted the indoor mask mandate earlier this month. Fans attending the First and Second Rounds will not be required to wear masks or show proof of vaccination. Individuals who are unvaccinated, are immunocompromised and have chronic health conditions placing them at higher risk of severe illness and complications from COVID-19 are advised to continue to wear a mask in all settings.
