Maryland has a handful of open scholarships available to work with ahead of the 2023 season with needs in the secondary along with the offensive and defensive line.
The staff, meanwhile, was a finalist for former FIU tight end Rivaldo Fairweather before he landed elsewhere. While the staff hasn’t filled the vacancy at the position, they’re tracking a new target: 2023 tight end Kevin Dougherty.
After playing football and lacrosse at Cedar Creek (NJ), Dougherty has since transitioned to Myrtle Beach Collegiate (SC) but has enjoyed an uptick in attention on the recruiting trail this spring. Miami became the first Power Five school earlier this month with a need as a defensive end but regional connections to the staff got Dougherty on their radar.
“I actually know coach Brown from when he coached in the area. He came across me, he said he liked my film. I’m going to come up for a visit on ,” Dougherty told IBG. “They’ve been talking to me for a couple of weeks now. It kind of popped up after Rutgers brought me on an official visit. Since then and I started to post my interest, I think Maryland started to take me more serious.” For Maryland, an offer hasn’t materialized yet for the 6-foot-3, 240-pound prospect but he’ll head to campus with the staff able to get eyes on him
“I kind of think that’s why I’m coming up. They like my film, but they just want to get eyes on me and check out the campus. I briefly talked to coach Sumlin over the phone with one of my coaches.”

Maryland will be the first of many stops with spring ball in full swing around the country.
“I have Miami this weekend, I have Rutgers next Tuesday. Coastal on the 30th, Maryland on the 1st, Marshall on the 8th then UNC on the 13th for their spring game. I’m super excited. I think Maryland would be a great fit for me. It’s probably one of the best opportunities for me so I’m looking forward to checking them out.”
Miami is the lone school recruiting Dougherty as a defensive end with Maryland among the other suitors eyeing him on the offensive side of the ball. While Dougherty takes in the added attention, understanding the probability of an offer and checking out the fit has his primary focus.
“Just questions on how they’d use me. I’d want to come in and contribute to a team right away any way that I can so where they envision me and how they’ve used their tight ends. I want to see what they have in store and what the plan for me is.”
