Maryland to host top portal guard, '22 four-star forward

Maryland is wrapping up their first official visit with former South Carolina guard Jermaine Couisnard, but the staff will see another top target make his way to campus.

Detroit transfer Antoine Davis plans to visit Georgetown, Kansas State and Maryland per Jon Rothstein. It’s a notable for development for Maryland as Davis became one of the hottest available names after entering the transfer portal on Thursday. Davis, the son of former Indiana head coach and current Detroit head coach Mike Davis, finished the 2021-22 season as the third-leading scorer and the Horizon League co-player of the year after averaging 23.9 points per game. Davis averaged over 24 points per game over his four years, became the first four-time All-Horizon League player and also broke Stephen Curry’s freshman three-point record with 132 made threes in 2019.

Kentucky, Auburn, Ohio State and Kansas were among the early schools pursuing Davis but head coach Kevin Willard and company will now get a lethal shooter on campus to potentially stabilize the Terps’ backcourt.

Meanwhile, Montverde (FL) four-star forward Malik Reneau told Nick Patton of Inside the Black and Gold that he will officially visit Maryland next weekend. Reneau, a consensus top-50 prospect, originally committed to Florida but backed off after Mike White accepted the Georgia head coaching position. Reneau is wrapping up his official visit to Indiana this weekend and will visit Virginia and Maryland next with the possibility of visiting either Tennessee or Georgia before making his final decision.

The Hoosiers are drawing buzz for Reneau with Indiana verbal Montverde four-star guard Jalen Hood-Schifino on campus as well this weekend, but the Terps will get their crack as head coach Kevin Willard and assistant Grant Billmeier look to finalize the frontcourt. Maryland returns Julian Reese in the frontcourt with Arnaud Revaz and Pavlo Dziuba serving as rotational pieces, but immediate playing time is available after the departure of former center Qudus Wahab.

As a senior, Reneau averaged 12 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Reneau is rated a four-star prospect and a 95 overall by On3, sitting as the 47th-best prospect nationally.

Meanwhile, IMG Academy (FL) three-star forward Noah Batchelor will begin his official visit to Maryland on Sunday.
