Maryland set to host Texas running back for official visit, talks updated recruitment

Maryland is less than one week removed from picking up its first running back commit with Pa. native Mekhi Graham in the fold, but after extending an offer to kick off March, Texas running back AJ Sanders III is set for his first official visit to Maryland.

Sanders, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound running back, is set to officially visit Maryland beginning June 19 for his first visit to campus, giving head coach Mike Locksley and assistant Andre Powell a chance to add to the running back room. Maryland moved quickly on the 6-foot, 209-pound running back after offering back on March 10, but it was actually an offer Sanders picked up weeks prior to announcing.

“[Andre Powell] actually offered me a while ago. He asked me to come up on an OV and I told him how are you going to tell me to come on an OV and you haven’t offered me? That’s when he said he told me he offered me already. It was kind of a funny little exchange,” Sanders said.

Powell has led the way as the position recruiter with assistant Zac Spavital chipping in as the area recruiter with ties to his coaches, making it clear to Sanders why he’s someone the Terps staff is high on. “He says he likes how I play. I’m a very physical player. I have size. He likes the big backs,” Sanders added.

Maryland has pointed to the fit and rotation as reasons why Sanders can materialize into an early contributor in Clint Trickett’s offense, giving him an initial understanding of the offensive scheme, but as far as the school itself, his upcoming visit will give the projected three-star a closer chance to dive into College Park and the university.

“I don’t know a lot about Maryland. I just know Stefon Diggs went there, DJ Moore.”

Sanders is coming off a visit to LSU and he’ll head to TCU on Friday with the Horned Frogs also in the mix for an official visit. Maryland also isn’t the only school set to host him with Houston, UConn and Cal also set to host him for an official visit with Cal in the mix for an unofficial spring visit.

“I should be getting everything finalized in the next few weeks,” Sanders said.

As a junior, Sanders posted 914 all-purpose yards while averaging over nine yards per carry, totaling ten touchdowns en route to being named to the second team All District.
