Maryland's defensive staff taking form ahead of spring practice

Nothing has been signed just yet, but Maryland’s defensive staff should be set as head coach Mike Locksley has found his defensive replacements.

FootballScoop reported on Monday night that former Louisiana assistant Wes Neighbors will join Maryland’s defensive staff, likely filling in at safety replacing Brian Stewart. Maryland is also expected to hire Florida Atlantic inside linebackers coach Lance Robinson for the same position, replacing Brawley Evans. With defensive line coach Brian Williams expected to be elevated to defensive coordinator, Maryland’s defensive staff should be complete for the 2022 season.

Locksley moved quickly to replace Kevin Steele after he up and left College Park just days after starting the job in favor of reuniting with Mario Cristobal at Miami. Along with stops at FAU, Alabama and USF, Neighbors was elevated to associate head coach just last month by new head coach Michael Desormeaux and played safety for the Crimson Tide back in 2008.

Maryland also announced changes to the offensive side of the ball last week with the addition of Gunter Brewer as wide receiver coach and Mike Miller to co-offensive coordinator.
