Maryland wide receiver Marcus Fleming will miss the final two games of the 2021 season and will have surgery on Wednesday, head coach Mike Locksley announced today.

“No BCEs. He’s a guy that’s stepped in and done a really good job here as a young player, but as we’ve learned, injuries will be part of the game,” Locksley said on Tuesday. “We’ll continue to coach the guys that are available to us. I hate for Marcus because I thought he was starting to come on for us as a player but luckily it’s not something that’ll maybe keep him out for an extended period of time. He’ll be done for the rest of this season but he’s got a bright future for all of us.”

Fleming ascended into the two-deep after the season-ending injuries to Dontay Demus and Jeshaun Jones, but took advantage of his expanded role down the stretch and complimented the unit with his explosiveness as the starting ‘H’ receiver. In seven games, Fleming posted 18 receptions for 197 yards and one touchdown.

The bulk of that production, though, came over the last four games as he tallied 15 catches for 193 yards. “You think about us on offense, the explosive plays in the passing game, returned and we had some guys really step up like a Carlos Carriere, like a Marcus Fleming,” Locksley said following the win over Indiana.

The third season-ending injury to the Terps’ receiver room paves opportunities for another young player and this time, Locksley sees Nick DeGennaro stepping up.

“One of the guys that has really jumped out probably in the last week for us, he’s starting to play more on special teams is Nick DeGennaro. Nick has been kind of bouncing back and forth between our scout team and then helping us. He had a broken finger, broken hand for quite a few months from training camp and we finally got the cast off about a week and a half ago. He’s one that has really kind of jumped out in practice and his approach, so I wouldn’t be surprised like I told you guys a few weeks ago about a Marcus and a Dede [McDougle]. Dede is still a work in progress, I think he has all the talent in the world, he’s a guy that should be able to help us but as with anything with our program, as you do things the right way good things happen and we’ve just got to continue to develop Dede. The work ethic, doing things the right way off the field. He’s got a chance to have a bright future for us and I’m hoping we’re able to get it out of him.”

Fleming, a four-star recruit, chose Nebraska over Maryland out of high school but transferred out of Lincoln to College Park following the 2020 season.
