Maryland running back Roman Hemby was named to the conference’s team of the week by PFF after recording his first 100-yard rushing game of the season. Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty was named to the national team at his position after his dominant performance against Washington St. as he now leads the country in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, yards per carry, yards per game, all-purpose yards and total touchdowns.
Hemby finished with 117 yards and one touchdown on ten carries in week five vs. Indiana, including a 75-yard rushing touchdown that set a season-high and tied his career high.
“The offensive line did a great job on that run. Just getting vertical as fast as I can. [Kaden Prather] came in and dug out the safety so it made my read a little bit easier and I was able to use my speed,” Hemby said after the game. “As far as my day, I feel like a lot of these other guys have been saying that there’s a lot more that I could’ve done and I will be my biggest critic when it comes to that, getting back to the drawing board.”
Hemby enters the bye week tenth in the Big Ten in rushing yards (318) while he’s recorded rushing touchdowns in consecutive games. He also recorded his first receiving touchdown of the season vs. Indiana, marking his first game as a Terp that he recorded both a rushing and receiving touchdown in the same game.
While the consistency with the rushing attack has been a point of emphasis by head coach Mike Locksley through the first month of the season and an offseason filled with buzz about the potential of second-year running back Nolan Ray, Hemby has drawn over one-third of Maryland’s carries with his 60 carries leading the way with Ray’s 34 attempts second on the team. His three rushing touchdowns also lead the team while both Ray and QB Billy Edwards Jr. have punched in a pair each.
