Maryland men's lacrosse upset, 8-6, vs. Rutgers in first Big Ten road game in 2025

Maryland men’s lacrosse dropped their second conference game of the season to the Scarlet Knights in an ugly 8-6 loss in Piscataway to drop to 8-2 on the year.

The Scarlet Knights came out to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter after Daniel Kelly scored the first goal of the game for the Terps. The Terps tried all game to climb back but once they finally got close, Rutgers pulled ahead and pulled off the upset.

Carden Stoller was a brick wall in the net all day for Rutgers. Stoller finished with 14 saves on 20 Terps shots on goal while also adding the game sealing goal to his name. Stoller also caused a turnover and picked up four ground balls to shut the Terps offense down all game long.

The Terps offense had their worst scoring output on the season in the loss. While they did only turn the ball over 13 times, they only had 20 total shots on goal and were never able to really figure Stoller out. The Terps missed the net on 50% of their shots in the game. Anytime you do that you will have a very hard time winning.

Shea Keethler and Sean Carrier went a combined 10/17 from the face-off dot in the game doing what they could to get the Terps back into the game after the first quarter.

The Terps defense did everything they could to keep the Terps in the game but ran out of gas at the end. Rutgers only had 15 shots on goal on the day and also had 16 turnovers. Rutgers failed their only extra man opportunity in the win as well.

Logan McNaney, while he did only have seven saves on the day, tied the Maryland all time record for career saves in the loss.

The Good

The Terps had the advantage in the box score in face-offs, ground balls, turnovers, shots on goal, shots, and penalties. Very rarely will that ever happen in a loss.

The Bad

The Terps missed the net on 50% of their total shots on the day. You simply can not win games if most of your shots are not even on goal.

The Ugly

The Terps went 0/3 in man up opportunities on the day. When you are playing in a close ugly game, especially against a conference foe that knows you well, you need to take advantage of every advantage you get.

Three Stars

Zach Whittier

Whittier led the team in scoring with a goal and two assists on the day while also adding a ground ball to his name.

Shea Keethler

Keethler, after a rough couple weeks had a bounce back game going 6/9 from the face-off dot with two ground balls as well.

Will Schaller

Shaller led the team with two caused turnovers and was tied for the lead on the team with three ground balls as well.
