Maryland men's lacrosse announces contract extension for head coach John Tillman

Ahead of Maryland men’s lacrosse’s first NCAA Tournament game this weekend, Maryland announced that men’s lacrosse head coach John Tillman has agreed to a contract extension through June 30, 2030.

Tillman is in his 15th season at Maryland and has posted a 192-55 record with the program, while he leads all active DI coaches in win percentage at 212-74 (74.1%). Tillman also sits second in program history in wins, has coached the program to 14 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, has appeared in ten Final Fours and won two national championships, including the 2018 team that posted the most wins in a season without a loss. Tillman has also posted a 31-11 career record in the NCAA Tournament, ranking sixth all-time and second among active coaches.

"Coach Tillman is a championship coach both on and off the field," Sorem said via release. "John has blended the program's historic 'Be The Best' mantra with his own principles of high character in all aspects of life. We are thrilled he will continue to lead our program at Maryland as we are in the midst of one of the most successful eras in Maryland lacrosse's illustrious history."

Tillman, also part of the Terps’ ongoing athletic director search committee, has also produced 91 All-American selections and three Tewaaraton Award winners, including Jared Bernhardt and Logan Wisnauskas in back-to-back years. Tillman has also led the program to success in the Big Ten, winning six regular-season titles and four tournament appearances.

“I have nothing but respect for the Maryland men's lacrosse program and being able to serve as the head coach of this program is something I take great pride in,” Tillman added via release. “This program is one with tremendous tradition and is one that I look to uphold every day. It's about the players, the coaching staff, the alums, and everyone on staff who contribute to our success. I am proud to be the head coach at Maryland and look forward to continuing to build a culture on and off the field, producing great men. It is an honor to coach this program, representing our school and our state.”

Maryland will kick off the 2025 NCAA Tournament this weekend when they host Air Force on Sunday, May 11 at 2:30 PM.
