Maryland men's basketball loses third staffer to head coaching role

For the third time this season, Maryland head coach Kevin Willard is losing an assistant for a head coaching opportunity. Director of player personnel Tevon Saddler is expected to become the next head coach at Nicholls State, per multiple reports. Saddler will replace Austin Claunch, who joined Nate Oats at Alabama this offseason, and rejoins a program where he once played and served as the director of operations for two seasons. Saddler joins Tony Skinn (George Mason) and Grant Billmeier (NJIT) as staffers who have left the program for head coaching opportunities this offseason, an uncanny feat as Willard reloads for year two. The combination of Saddler and Skinn’s departure could weaken Maryland’s recruiting efforts in Baltimore as the former St. Frances star teamed up with Skinn to land Jahn Lamothe last cycle and were leading the way with 2024 five-star Derik Queen. Saddler, an Aberdeen native, joined the Maryland staff after serving as an assistant at McNeese State. Saddler worked at Nicholls State for two seasons beginning in 2019. Prior to that, Saddler worked as a grad assistant at the University of South Alabama where he also received his Masters of Science in Sports Management. After being named player of the year at St. Frances (MD) as a high school senior, Tevon Saddler began his college career at UNC-Greensboro before earning SoCon Freshman of the Year and securing consecutive all conference selections. Saddler then transferred to Nicholls where he led the Colonels to their first conference championship in two decades.
