Continuing a tradition that head coach Buzz Williams started at Marquette in 2008, Maryland men’s basketball announced the first Buzz’s Bunch Event in College Park is set for Saturday, Aug. 2.
Buzz’s Bunch, an annual event continued during Williams’ time at Virginia Tech and Texas A&M, is a non-profit aimed to “helping children with special needs come together socially while gaining a love and appreciation for the game of basketball.”
Maryland also announced that one non-conference game beginning in 2025-26 will be designated as the Buzz’s Bunch game, “where members will receive free tickets and will have the opportunity to spend time with players and staff on the court before warm-ups.”
“Held each year on the first Saturday of August, the annual Buzz's Bunch camp is dedicated to creating a positive, inclusive experience for local children with special needs. Hosted inside the XFINITY Center, the camp opens the door to new friendships, unforgettable memories, and the powerful impact of connection through the sport of basketball!,” via release. “The completely-free camp has blossomed into a community with more than 300 members across the nation, many of whom remain in close contact with Coach Buzz and many affiliated players.
"There are children that started at Marquette in year number one. Some of those children are now coaches. Some of those children have won gold medals in the Special Olympics. There's other stories that are sad,” Williams said last year when asked about the significance of the event. “The opportunity that my family has had along with the families of our program, to be able to build the relationships that we've had. I hope, more than anything else, that it is a part of our legacy wherever we've been.”
"That's why we try to honor, even on the back of those shirts you see, the different colors because we want everybody to be on our team. I think there is over 3,000 so far that have special needs children, whose families have been represented at more than one 'Buzz Bunch' event in the time that we've been doing it, so that's pretty cool."
