New head coach Buzz Williams has now landed his ninth transfer portal commit to fill the eleventh scholarship on the 2025-26 roster after former Northeastern forward Collin Metcalf went public with his decision to transfer to Maryland men’s basketball next season.
Metcalf, a 6-foot-9 center originally from Germany, is expected to join the program with one season of eligibility remaining.
The latest portal pickup also adds much-needed reinforcement in the paint with Metcalf teaming up with Pharrel Payne at the five, filling the shoes left vacant by heralded freshman Derik Queen in 2025-26.
Metcalf averaged 2.7 points through three seasons at Northeastern and is coming off his second consecutive season shooting well over 50% from the field, but he’s made his mark on the defensive end of the floor. As a freshman, he averaged 1.3 points in just over eight minutes per game while drawing one start, but his 18 blocks in 19 games foreshadowed what was to come.
Metcalf then shot 75% from the field on 20 total attempts as a sophomore, but his junior season entrenched him as a reliable rim protector. Metcalf averaged four points and five rebounds in 2024-25, but his 78 blocks in 30 starts and 32 appearances ranked tenth nationally and led the CAA. Metcalf posted five games with five or more blocks while his 78 single-season blocks also ranks third all-time in Northeastern’s program history and the most since Shawn James recorded 196 in 2005-06. Metcalf's career-high was back on Feb. 24 vs. Monmouth after registering seven blocks, which hasn’t been done by a Terp since Diamond Stone recorded eight blocks vs. Nebraska on Feb. 3, 2016.
Metcalf ended his time at Northeastern as a CAA All-Defensive Team selection, becoming the 11th player in program history to do so as he bolsters the Terps’ frontcourt in 2025-26 as the new staff rounds out the evolved roster.
Metcalf joins Isaiah Watts (Washington State) as additions who have announced their transfer into the program but have not yet been announced. The four additions from Texas A&M – Pharrel Payne, Solomon Washington, Andre Mills and George Turkson – were the first batch of transfers announced, as David Coit (Kansas), Elijah Saunders (Virginia) and Myles Rice (Indiana) were the latest signed additions. Maryland also has a pair of 2025 commits in the fold in Spanish guard Guillermo Del Pino and five-star Darius Adams, who becomes the program's second McDonald’s All-American in as many recruiting cycles.
