Maryland made the top group for a local product on Wednesday who recently visited campus.
Good Counsel (MD) four-star defensive end Neeo Avery released a top six of Georgia, LSU, Kentucky, Maryland, Ole Miss and Oregon on Wednesday. Avery, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound athlete, kicked off his official visit schedule with a trip to Maryland the weekend of June 3 and is fresh off an official visit to Ole Miss. He will officially visit Kentucky this weekend while Georgia was the expected landing spot when Avery was set to make his commitment back in August.
Avery opted to postpone his initial commitment until the conclusion of his junior season, opting to commit to Penn State back on January 22. Avery backed off his pledge on March 27 and has developed into a coveted target since making the full-time switch to defense.
Avery was the Falcons’ starting quarterback last fall while also flashing as an edge rusher and at times, safety, but he’ll make the full-time position switch to defensive end and remain a package quarterback for Good Counsel this fall. 2024 quarterback Frankie Weaver Jr. is expected to become the starting quarterback this fall, helping make Avery’s position switch a reality.
As for Maryland, Avery was proactive about visiting campus last summer after the program unveiled the new $153 million Jones-Hill House and returned for a pair of games last fall. He followed that up with a trip to College Park during Maryland’s spring practice this year and returned for the Terps’ spring game. With the pursuit led by outside linebacker coach James Thomas, Avery is not expected to decide until late summer or fall as he’s become a top target for a Maryland team looking to restock the talent along the defensive line.
Avery is rated a four-star prospect and a 90 overall by On3, sitting as the 264th-best prospect in the nation.
