Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon landed his final scholarship player for the 2021-22 season when former Old Dominion guard Xavier Green announced his decision on Friday. But after parting ways with three-star point guard Paul Lewis this summer, the Terps do not hold a commitment in the 2022 class but the staff saw themselves stay in the mix with a pair of out-of-state targets.
Three-star combo guard Quadir Copeland took an unofficial visit to Maryland back in June and heading into August, Maryland remains in the mix. Copeland announced a top eight last week with DePaul, La Salle, Maryland, Miami, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Penn State, and Syracuse making the cut. Copeland is set to announce his commitment on August 10, however, as Syracuse remains the expected choice.
Just one day after Copeland’s announcement, Maryland learned they remained squarely in the mix for four-star forward Aidan Shaw after he announced a top six of Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma State, Maryland, and Missouri. Shaw added an offer from the spring after new assistant Danny Manning leaned on his Midwest recruiting ties to bring the 6-foot-8, 190-pound prospect on campus. Shaw followed through with an official visit to College Park the weekend of June 28 and will look to take an official visit to Arkansas later in August.
The staff also added two new names to their board this week after offering shooting guard TJ Caldwell and forward Jordan Walsh. Caldwell, a 6-foot-4 guard out of Waxahachie Faith (TX), picked up an offer from the staff after Danny Manning watched the three-star prospect on the AAU circuit and are now working out dates for a potential visit to campus. Caldwell carried early offers from schools like Ole Miss and Texas and was interested in shutting his recruitment down early, but opted on prolonging his recruitment to give Maryland a chance to jump in. As for Walsh, the four-star prospect added an offer after speaking with assistant Matt Brady on Thursday to give the staff another wing target. Walsh has taken visits to Arkansas, Oklahoma, and TCU while Kansas, Auburn, Georgia, Florida State, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma State are among the long list of schools already in the mix. As a junior, Walsh averaged 17 points and 11 rebounds as he led Faith Family Academy to the Texas 4A state title. Walsh transferred to Southern California Academy for his senior season.
