Maryland found themselves inside the top seven for one of the area’s top defensive backs. St. Frances (MD) four-star safety Ify Obidegwu released a top seven with Alabama, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee and USC making the cut. The 6-foot, 190-pound safety visited Tennessee last month with his teammates and has previously visited Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon and USC. Maryland also hosted Obidegwu several times last spring and for a game last fall as inside linebacker coach Lance Thompson leads the way for the four-star product. With Obidegwu’s cousin also a former Terp, Maryland head coach Mike Locksley also got a chance to build a relationship with Obidegwu dating back to last fall. “He’s a real cool guy. He’s from here so it’s nice, relating to everything he’s saying about life and playing for your hometown.” Maryland has landed at least one prospect from St. Frances over the last four cycles as the staff is after several more from the Baltimore powerhouse. Four-star quarterback Mike Van Buren is among the early priorities while running back Dejuan Williams sits high on the board, but Obidegwu teams up with four-star safety Edrees Farooq to lead a loaded Panthers’ secondary. Obidegwu is rated a four-star prospect and a 91 overall by On3. He’s ranked as the sixth-best prospect in Maryland and the 182nd-best prospect in the country.
