Maryland football is back down to 20 commitments in the 2025 class heading into the weekend after Chaminade-Madonna (FL) three-star defensive lineman Donta Simpson flipped his commitment to in-state Miami (FL) on Friday night.
Simpson picked up an offer from Miami (FL) and head coach Mario Cristobal after making his way to Coral Gables last weekend following the dead period, setting the stage for the imminent flip. He becomes the third prospect to flip away from Maryland this cycle, joined by Kahlil Stewart (Syracuse) and Julien Horton (UNC).
Simpson committed to Maryland in late June over Florida Atlantic with West Virginia also in the mix, giving co-defensive coordinator Brian Williams an initial win as the staff rebuilds its defensive line in the 2025 cycle.
“I feel like the coaches, the school can develop me the best not just as a man but as a football player. I just feel like Maryland is the best possible spot for me to make it to the NFL,” Simpson said. “Brian Williams and coach Locks, they’re great guys to be around. They made me feel welcomed and I feel like it just felt like family with them and I’ve been knowing them.”
The current defensive line haul this cycle is led by four-star Bryce Jenkins, one of five commitments currently in the cycle and one of three hailing from the DMV as the staff will likely have multiple starting spots to fill in 2025.
As a junior, Simpson posted 43 tackles, 19.5 TFLs, 7.5 sacks, three forced fumbled, two fumble recoveries and one interception. Donta Simpson is rated a three-star and 88 overall by On3.
Maryland will look to climb back to 21 commitments in the 2025 class when four-star OL Jaylen Gilchrist announces his pledge on Saturday afternoon.
