Corey Dyches enters the season as the lone veteran in Maryland’s tight end room with a host of underclassmen looking to carve their niche within the offense. Maryland doesn’t have a tight end committed in the 2024 cycle with a more patient approach at the position, but they‘ve started laying the foundation for 2025 targets with their junior seasons around the corner.
Northwood (NC) three-star tight end Gus Ritchey is among those targets as the 6-foot-3, 225-pound target has acclimated himself with the program. Ritchey has made his way to Maryland multiple times, most recently in the spring for practice as a pair of coaches have led the way.
“Dad actually has been talking to coach Thomas with Maryland’s recruiting. We’re going to try to get over there to talk coach Locksley in-person,” Ritchey told IBG. “I’ve talked to him a couple of times, but not one-on-one to sit down and get to know him.”
Maryland’s area recruiter, Gunter Brewer, has left a strong impression and his coaching experience is a big reason why.
“He’s a great guy. He’s from around the area I live in. He originated and has been a lot of places but he knows some spots. And he’s always really humble for coaching freaking legends,Randy Moss. This guy is right here sitting right in front of me in my coach’s office and he coached Randy Moss. The most humble, honest coach. He’s an amazing guy.”
Ritchey isn’t expected to visit Maryland this upcoming weekend with a visit set to NC State on Friday, but a fall visit is in the works as he makes his way back to the out-of-state schools. NC State, UNC and Duke have all thrown in their hats early to get the in-state target on campus while Virginia Tech, Virginia and Michigan all hosted him in the spring. Maryland, however, remains in the conversation early.
“Every time I go up there, it’s always worth the trip.”
Gus Ritchey is rated a three-star prospect and an 87 overall by On3, sitting as the 12th-best player in North Carolina. He is also the 366th-best prospect in the 2025 class, according to the On3 composite rankings.
