Clearwater Academy International (FL) saw a handful of rising seniors make the trip up north to College Park back on March 1 and now, emerging linebacker Keyari James is set to return to campus for his official visit.
James, a 6-foot-1, 225-pound inside linebacker originally from Canada, will officially visit Maryland the weekend of June 9 and it’s Maryland who holds the edge heading into next weekend’s visit. “Maryland is definitely the main one. They’re the one that’s stood out to me the most in my recruiting,” James told IBG.
Inside linebacker coach Lance Thompson has led the way as James has taken note of the Terps’ consistency heading into summer. “He calls my mom. He’s a good guy, seems like a great coach. He came by for one of our spring practices,” James added. “He told me his vision for the linebacker he needs is a physical, instinctual box linebacker that can hit and make plays and he sees me working in that scheme. I see myself as someone that can help out with that.”
With his unofficial visit giving him a chance to know what to expect for his upcoming official visit, James was also quick to note that he took notice of Ryan Davis and Maryland’s strength and conditioning program.
“The culture, you can’t really know how a school feels. I’ve visited quite a few schools and you can’t really know how it feels until you visit. So on my visit , I kind of saw a good, hard-working culture. I like the strength and conditioning staff, the culture they have in the weight room. The coaches seem tight-knit so it seems like a good place to be. I talked to Brian Williams, I talked to Navorro Bowman which was cool.”
With Wake Forest and Miami (FL) also monitoring the Canadian linebacker, James admitted there’s a chance he leaves his Maryland official with a decision in hand.
“I do think it’s a possibility. I like to feel the vibe so we’ll see how the visit goes.”
