Maryland Lands Second Portal Defensive Back

Maryland has landed another transfer portal commitment on the defensive side of the ball. Former Miami safety Avantae Williams has announced his transfer to Maryland, filling one of two vacant spots left at the position and joins the program with two remaining years of eligibility. A former top-50 prospect in the 2020 class, Williams ironically flipped his commitment from Oregon—then under Mario Cristobal—to Miami only to depart from the Canes program following Cristobal’s first season in Coral Gables. Williams missed his 2020 season with an undisclosed medical condition and over the next two seasons, Williams started one game in 17 appearances and tallied 27 tackles, one interception and fumble recovery. Williams became the fourth Miami defensive back to enter the transfer portal this offseason as the staff quickly pounced. Inside linebacker coach Lance Thompson went in-home with the Florida native this past week and as confidence built through the week, Williams opted to officially visit Maryland instead of Colorado this weekend. Williams becomes the fourth transfer portal commitment this offseason for Maryland, joining FIU receiver Tyrese Chambers, Saint Francis defensive end Donnell Brown and Cincinnati cornerback Ja’Quan Sheppard, who will arrive in College Park this week. Williams was among the transfer targets on campus this weekend, joining former West Virginia receiver Kaden Prather and FIU receiver Tyrese Chambers while Good Counsel four-star athlete Dylan Gooden was back on campus.
