It’s been 52 days since Maryland football landed a commitment, but that changed on Thursday after Avalon (MD) linebacker Caleb Wheatland announced his commitment.

The 6-foot-2, 235-pound linebacker becomes the tenth commitment for Maryland after Wheatland first visited campus last Wednesday, June 9, and returned today for a workout with the staff. Wheatland’s visit last week gave him a chance to check out the facilities more in-depth as the Virginia native nabbed his first Power Five offer back on June 3. “It was great,” he added. “The coaches and the facility was really nice.” Wheatland becomes the third linebacker in the class, joining Spalding (MD) three-star Kellan Wyatt and Wilson (NJ) three-star Nyair Graham.

Wheatland also held offers from Kent State, Ball State, Utah State, and Coastal Carolina and recently took visits to Old Dominion and Liberty. Wheatland reclassified from the 2021 class and transferred from Westfield (VA) to Avalon as a 2022 prospect. At the Under Armour camp back in April, Wheatland was one of the MVPs named among the linebackers alongside four-star Shawn Murphy. Wheatland projects as an inside linebacker at the next level where the Terps continue to stockpile a young yet loaded room. Inside linebacker coach Brawley Evans and outside linebacker coach Ron Zook ran point in Wheatland’s recruitment.

As a junior, Wheatland started all 14 games for Westfield and amassed 68 tackles, one sack, four interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns before drawing first-team All-Region honors. Wheatland is rated a three-star prospect and an 86 overall by 247Sports, leaving the Terps’ 2022 class at 23rd nationally and fifth in the Big Ten behind Ohio State, Rutgers, Penn State, and Michigan.
