Maryland has picked up its 12th commitment in the 2026 cycle after DeMatha (MD) three-star safety Darrell Carey went public with his decision.
Carey, a 6-foot-2 safety, decommitted from Penn State last week and only set an official visit to Maryland while Iowa and Wisconsin were among the schools in the mix.
Assistant Aazaar Abdul-Rahim spearheaded Carey’s recruitment through the fall with Maryland ramping up efforts after the coaching change at Penn State, but Maryland was involved well before then. Maryland was entrenched in Carey’s top five ahead of his April commitment to Penn State as the three-star planned to officially visit both schools, but those plans not materializing helped Maryland down the line.
Carey took his official visit to Maryland this past weekend for the homecoming game vs. Indiana on Nov. 1 alongside top target and teammate, WR Lavar Keys.
“I think more about their plan and about Maryland, how coach Locksley takes care of his players after school, after football, that’s what really stood out about it,” Carey told IBG. “It was a really good experience, a lot of fun and I feel like I really learned a lot about Maryland, coach Locks. It was a great time up there,” Carey told IBG.
With Carey’s commitment, Maryland has now landed at least one prospect out of nearby DeMatha in each of the last three cycles after RB Bud Coombs and OL Terez Davis, who has since transferred.
They were talking about what I can do if I really come in and be focused. They told me I can play safety then I can learn and play the nickel. [Aazaar] brought up [my versatility] a lot. Coach Aazaar really went over the scheme so I feel like I know it really well,” Carey added.
