As expected, Maryland made the top group for Good Counsel (MD) five-star edge Anthony Sweeney with a host of blue bloods in the mix with an SEC chase expected to materialize.
Maryland made the top group for Sweeney alongside Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Miami (FL), Ole Miss, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.
Sweeney previously told IBG this week that official visits to both Alabama and Texas A&M are already locked in while Tennessee has drawn buzz as a top contender, South Carolina has remained consistent last summer while Texas Tech became the latest school to jump into the picture.
As for Maryland, Sweeney has long maintained that the hometown program is expected to receive an official visit with assistant James Thomas teaming up with defensive grad assistant David Brownlee on the pursuit with defensive coordinator Ted Monachino building a relationship, though he's not as involved.
Maryland has made Sweeney a priority dating back to 2025 after a full-day unofficial visit during spring practice gave the Falcons star an in-depth look at the program after noting the visit was "real structured."
“I loved it there,” Sweeney told IBG last April. “I met a lot of them. The only coach I knew was coach James [Thomas]. Meeting the defensive coordinator was really good, loved him. And then talking to the head coach again, it wasn’t my first time meeting him but it was one of my first times really talking with him, having a conversation with him.”
