Maryland in the mix for official from four-star cornerback

Edgewater (FL) wrapped up their spring game last weekend as four-star cornerback Cai Bates is among the 2024 prospects who's attracted a long list of college coaches to the Florida powerhouse. With spring ball now complete and Bates holding off on camps, he'll turn his attention to officials and he has two already set in stone. "I'll be at Tennessee on the 16th, LSU 23rd," Bates told IBG. "I'm possibly doing Alabama the first weekend of June. That's not for sure locked in yet but we're talking about it. I think we'll end up getting it set." Each school has already hosted the 6-foot-1, 177-pound defensive back for at least one unofficial as the trio of SEC schools look to separate themselves. "I've been to Tennessee, LSU and Alabama before so I've been to all the schools I plan on taking an official visit to. visited unofficially at least once." But after hosting Bates for a two-day visit earlier this spring, they aren't alone as Maryland remains heavily involved and is working on a date to get him back to campus again. "I have a great relationship with Maryland. I haven't decided on that weekend. They plan on doing it the 9th but I'm planning to not do any officials that weekend because it's my sister's birthday weekend so we're trying to just figure out something and find a date that works." Outside linebacker coach James Thomas has extensive ties to Bates' camp and has led the way as the primary recruiter, while cornerback coach Henry Baker also stopped to watch Bates at Edgewater's spring game. "I talk to coach Baker all the time. He came through my school a few times during the spring, I've talked to him a good amount of times." Bates will look to make his decision following potentially his four official visits. "I'll be committed before the season starts, late July."
